The Amprobe GSD600 Gas Leak Detector is a fast responding gas leak detector for methane and propane gas. The meter emits a frequency tone when gas is detected. The frequency of the beep coincides with the concentration of the gas. The LEDs display the level of gas present in an area or room. Pinpoint gas leaks for closed piping systems. Use the mute function in quiet work areas and utilize the LED displays. Or a standard earphone jack for hearing the meter in loud environments.

My GSD600 is a great tool, i have used a cheap tool from home depot normally but I do work at peoples homes and want the accuracy and ergonomic feel of a quality tool. We had a slight leak in a rental aprtment where I thought is was a musty smell, I took out the GSD600 and the flexable line enabled me to find a poor seal of a joint just inside the wall. All my headaches were gone and the landlord gave me a discount on my rent for repairing and diagnosing the problem for him. Very good tool, you get what you pay for.

This thing really works
Had new furnace installed (9-10-15) and always smelled gas every time I was around it,called the company that installed unit and after spraying blue liquid ,the tech told me to keep your window open and it is my imagination.
Got the Amprobe GSD600 and Wow.
Found leak at hot water heater pipe(disturbed during furnace installation?)called same company and this time after trying the blue spray I had to use the Amprobe to point the area of the leak.after a week walked by furnace room and stil smelled gas,armed with the Amprobe found leak at furnace shut-off valve,tightened nut and that was fixed.
Gave another week to clear the area from any gas smell and again,a faint smell of gas when above hot water heater thermostat control/gas valve.
Yesterday water heater tech was over and after telling me that I did not believe on electronic sniffers “( I have one and it is 15 years old and always gave me false alarms)”.
He tried the green slime,than another liquid and stil could not find or smell the leak.again the Amprobe to the rescue.
To make story short,as I am writing this,the hot water thermostat/gas valve is on order and will be delivered at home and the tech will be here the day after.
The Amprobe GSD600 is a little pricy but the look on plumbers/tech is priceles

Short on Necessary and Useful Instructions
The unit is lacking a comprehensive and useful set of instructions. There is nothing about Natural Gas, which can be detected with the GSD600 because Methane is a major component. Doesn’t anyone at Amprobe know anything about Natural Gas? There is Zero information about it and no guide to the levels of gas or what they mean. Do we run out of the room when levels reach 320 or 640? How can you not include those important instructions?! Shame on Amprobe.
The unit works, but I’m not sure what I’m reading.

Just what I needed
I did a substantial amount of research before purchasing this meter and what it came down to was that this meter only detected 2 combustible gases methane and propane. Several other detectors I considered detected a laundry list of gasses. Since I only want to test for gas leaks and not refrigerants, paint thinner, halon etc. I chose this detector. If I could get one at this price that told me what gas it was detecting I would have gone there but those are over a thousand bucks. I used it to check an oil furnace and it detected the combustion gasses in the flue.

Does what it’s supposed to do
I bought the GSD 600 to use primarily to diagnose a propane leak in my travel trailer. Although I detected the gas odorant by smell, I was not able to find the leak using a soap solution.
The GSD 600 found it easily…it was the burner valve on the hot water heater. After replacing the valve, it was easy to check my work using the GSD 600 to make sure there was no further leak detected.
The device is easy to use and appears to provide reliable and repeatable readings.

My experience … I opened up my utility closet (which houses the clothes washer and dryer) one day and thought I smelled gas. I called the gas company and they sent someone out to check, but by the time he arrived, the smell of gas had dissipated and he couldn’t detect any leak. I was convinced there had to be a leak and I bought this gas detector so I could monitor for leaks. The closet, the main valve, and the inside of the dryer checked out okay with the main valve off, but when I turned the gas on and checked back the next day, the detector alerted me to a small amount of gas within the dryer itself. The problem – a faulty valve in the dryer. So this detector is the real deal and helped me avoid a disaster. It is worth every penny I spent on it! (P.S. I replaced the gas dryer with an electric one.)

Great product!!
I am in the residential hvac field. During heating season and throughout the year this a must have. Finds and pinpoints gas leaks very well. It is sensative to pipe dope but havent found one that wasnt. Nice blow molded case and extra batteried. Is solid built and was a fair price. Only thing i would have liked to se is rechargeable batteries. Again works great

I was concerned it might not be sensitive enough but it’s great. I removed a black iron propane supply pipe and left it laying flat on my workbench the week before I received the GSD600. When I was checking out this new unit I put the probe at the end of that pipe and after about 15 seconds it alerted at the 40ppm level. I call that pretty darn sensitive!
