Decent multimeter for home use
Strengths:
* Good overall meter for home or casual technical use
* Quick and accurate measurements
* MAX/MIN/HOLD Options
* Capacitance and Frequency Measurements
Weaknesses:
* The VoltSense feature is not reliable
* The rear hanging clip falls off easily and will damage the meter if used
* The internal beeper is too loud and too aggressive
* One-handed operation is awkard
Full review:
Besides the usual Voltage, Current, and Resistance measurements standard on any Multimeter, the Amprobe AM-60 provides a few additional features that are nice to have in the $60-80 price range including Frequency, Capacitance, Min/Max and Hold measurements, and VoltSense. VoltSense is a probeless voltage sensing feature for detecting the presence of an AC voltage without using the test leads. The product packaging and user manual claims the AM-60 has an NCV and Logic Test function but I was unable to find any mention of these features in the manual or determine how to use them if they exist. The AM-60 case is composed of thick and very hard plastic with a rubber handgrip on the left and right side, and a rubber probe holder and hanging clip on the back. The meter is heavy enough to inspire confidence in it’s construction but light enough to be comfortably carried in a tool bag. The function selector feels a little soft at first but actually makes it easy to hold the meter in the right or left hand and change the function using a thumb. It’s not a perfect fit as you do need to hold the meter a little too high in the palm for a secure grip, and changing functions feels a little awkward. The lettering on the meter appears silk-screened so it’s longevity under regular use is questionable. Measurements are fast and within the stated accuracy. The AM-60 doesn’t blank the display while taking a measurement so you can see the digits very quickly count up to the measured value. Some users may find that distracting while others will like the “high-tech” appearance. The display contains reasonably large digits and text but could actually have been larger given the dimensions of the case and would have improved the experience of using the meter. The rubber hanger and probe clip on the back of the meter slips off with very little resistance on the unit I tested so do not use it as a hanger or belt clip if you want to avoid dropping the meter while walking around the job site. The VoltSense function is not reliable enough for serious use. I tried it on live outlets, switches, plug wires, extension cords, florescent lamps, etc. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I was able to get VoltSense to work on DC voltages by flicking the meter past the DC voltage. But overall the VoltSense feature is not sensitive enough to be reliable. The most annoying feature of the AM-60 is the internal beeper. It beeps when you turn it on, when you change functions, and every time you press any of the option buttons. After a while the beeps annoyed me to no end. It would be nice of there was a feature to turn off the beeper without affecting the Diode and Continuity function.

This meter meets all my needs to check electical problems.
Meter is easy to use. Fits in one hand so I don’t have to seat it done to use it. Screen has large numbers so I don’t have to wear my prescription eye glasses, just use stafty glasses. Selector switch for different functions is easy to use and handle.

This device has the most requested measurements of a laboratory at school or home hobbyist
This device has the most requested measurements of a laboratory at school or home hobbyist, also the voltage sensing function without touching is appropriate for places where it is not easy to get. Maybe a part where it falls a bit short is in the measurement of resistance and in some cases is required to measure resistances of 4 and 8 ohms, I also left wondering if you can measure small currents of the order of tens of mA.

This multimeter is easy on my older eyes.
I don’t use it everyday, but its always ready when I do. I really like the larger numbers. I have had other brands in the past, but the AM-60 is rock solid. The continuity tone is a nice feature that some others don’t have. Let’s me keep my eyes on the contacts, not the display. This has been used by students for robotics competitions. Not overly fancy, just a good reliable tool.

Handy device to have in your toolbox
I’ve been using this to troubleshoot electrical problems while working on my cars and I can definitely say that I still wouldn’t be done with some projects if it wasn’t for this

Great tool!
I use mine almost everyday as a facilities Technician and think it’s great for general use. It’s held up for about 6 years now. The probe holders on the back is really helpful.
